In God's Humor

Jamware was a hobby computer store John (a friend), Cora and I opened while I was employed by Civil Service working for the Department of Defense. Cora remembers the pitch I gave her. It went something like, 'Honey, would you help me open a retail computer business? All you will have to do is answer the phone." The business took off in a big way. It was definitely a case of being at the right place and at the right time. I ultimately resigned from Civil Service and pursued my dream of owning a business of my own.

After we were up and running and had the store stocked with software, we did a weeklong promotion. I marked all the product with different colored stickers. Each color represented a specific discount percentage. The product was marked for a week prior to the sale. Everyone coming in the store asked about the colored dots. The sale was to be Friday night on extended hours. About 1/2 hour before sale time, there weren't any cars or customers so I figured the promotion was a dud. Cora, Jeff and I left to get a hamburger at Don's Alley.

As we drove back into Jamware's parking lot, I noticed that the lot was full and hardly any parking left. My comment to Cora was, someone else must be having a sale. Look at all those cars. I think Cora picked up on the idea first that the someone else was Jamware. As Barney would say, 'Holy Moly' look at all those people. There was standing room only in the store. The clerk behind the counter thought he was going to be lynched because he didn't know what the discount codes were and people wanted to buy.

Jeff had stocked a table with candy and soda. He did a thriving business of keeping the customers stoked up with caffeine and sugar. I think both he and I turned a good profit that night. God is so gracious to give us good ideas. It's our responsibility to act on them.

"That seemed like a good idea to me, ...... It's a good land that God, our God, is giving us!" Deut. 1:23
